The league connects people from an array of socioeconomic backgrounds through a structured basketball setting to create a positive social outlet for young men.
Triple Double is geared toward young men, ages 18 to 25, but that does not limit the vast differences between league players and teammates. Players in the league share the desire to continue playing organized basketball, because most have recently completed their high school or collegiate eligibility.
Players widely differ in ethnicity, class and personality. Basketball is the one common bond that makes it possible for Triple Double players connect. While most adult sports leagues operate on team registration, each Triple Double player must enter the league as an individual. Player-captains then draft players – based on the basketball ability demonstrated at the Triple Double pre-draft workouts – to form a team of no more than eight players. The draft format is what drives a Triple Double community that inspires young men who are still transitioning to adulthood to be positive social role models.
The Triple Double season runs Sundays and Thursday nights December through March. For the last six years during those cold Minnesota winter months, the gym at East Side Neighborhood Services, where Triple Double calls home, has acted a common gathering ground for players and their families and friends. Players often gather hours before their games, or stay hours after they play, just to hang out and watch their peers play.
Triple Double is a nonprofit organization that offers multiple ways to get involved, including volunteering, interning, playing, and sponsorship.
